Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

October is "Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness" month. I do not believe that these belong together. In another form, I have seen it touted as "Miscarriage, Stillbirth, and Infant Loss Awareness" month. I like that even less. I do not like that infant loss gets separated from other forms of child loss, as though because they were "only" babies when they died they are not as significant. I do not believe that infant loss is similar to miscarriage or stillbirths. (I'm not saying that those aren't as bad, I am saying they are different and deserve their own rightful banner.) As someone who has had both, I can speak from experience and say that they are not the same.

At any rate, nobody asked me.

October IS SIDS Awareness Month, however, and I can get on board with that one. Someone posted this to my Facebook account so I will post it here.

SIDS is responsible for more deaths than any other cause in childhood for babies one month to one year of age, claiming 150,000 victims in the United States in this generation alone - 7,000 babies each year -nearly one baby every hour of every day. It strikes families of all races, ethnic and socioeconomic origins without warning; neither parent nor physician can predict that something is wrong. In fact, most SIDS victims appear healthy prior to death.Remembering my son and all the babies who went to sleep one day and never woke up.

PS-Comments are not gone for good. I tried to switch to Disqus for more control over them. There is apparently a backlog for importing stuff and all of my comments for the past 2 years have been lost in limbo somewhere. They have also conveniently "disabled" the button that will allow me to delete my account from their services. They got a nice little email from me today about that. As soon as Disqus is taken off of here, the comments will be back. I can see where you guys have written me, but as of right now I can't do anything about it.

I don't like that, either. Why must they combine them? I had a stillbirth AND I lost a baby to SIDS and even I don't like that infant loss is grouped in with pregnancy loss. I know that makes me sound bitchy, but it's like comparing apples and oranges.
